Chapter Nineteen

Instead of taking the taxi over to the Grand Solomon Hotel, I have them take me to the nearest Jeep rental location. It’s a tiny two-story building smashed between a restaurant and an insurance office and looks nothing like a vehicle rental business. But there are two Jeeps sitting out front in the only two parking spaces in front of the entire building. Ten minutes later I’m driving the red Jeep back toward the Grand Solomon. I’m tired of relying on other people to get around this island. I also need to have a very serious discussion with Rafe. Not only did Ms. Stamper’s husband work for him, but two of the other women, one of whom is Claire, have some ancillary connection to his businesses. I’m not willing to accept that as coincidence.

The truth is Rafe is an accomplished liar. He tried to play me, and I suspect he’s still doing so with his wide-eyed deer bit. The reason he knew Claire Taylor was missing is because he orchestrated it. How else better to cover your own tracks?

I pull up to the Grand Solomon and opt for a parking space around the side of the hotel rather than valet. But when I get inside, I’m informed that Mr. Connor is out for the day. Convenient. Just like Breckenridge, he’s managed to disappear when things get squirrely.

“Wait a moment,” the concierge says as I’m shooting frustrated glances around the room, trying to figure out my next move. “You were here with us the other night, weren’t you?”

“I was,” I say. I’m about to tell him I’m with the FBI, but Zara’s voice pops into my head and I hold back. “I…was with Mr. Connor, attending the gala at the Breckenridge mansion.”

“Ah, yes. I heard that was quite the party. I hope you found it enjoyable.”

“I did,” I say, dropping the hard edge in my voice. “That’s actually why I’m here. I can’t seem to find my phone and I think I might have accidentally left it in Mr. Connor’s room.” I lean closer to the concierge. “We came back together after the party.”

“I would be happy to leave Mr. Connor a note. How can we get in touch with you if he finds it?”

“That’s the problem. I have to catch a flight in about an hour. And I really need that phone. It has all my business contacts on it.” I lower my voice again. “As well as some…sensitive pictures that I’d rather not get out into the public. Is there any way I could just go look for it?” I see the hesitation on the concierge’s face. “Please. I wouldn’t be asking if it weren’t an emergency. You don’t know when Rafe will be back?”

“I’m afraid not, Miss…”

“Agostini,” I say. “Emily Agostini. I represent Thompson Intermodal and believe me, they are not going to be happy if I come back and tell them all my work information is still in St. Solomon.”
